Crime Synopsis:

Once a member of the transnational, trans world trading syndicate known informally as the "Merchants Guild", Mormon used his position within the company to enrich himself beyond the salary and commission provided. Overtime what became some dollars traded here and there with what amounts to hitchhikers became a smuggling ring using company assets, operating in the name of the company to get beyond doors otherwise closed to civilians. The cargo bays of ships are never completely full and the guild looks the other way as long as the merchandise isn't too hot, but Mormon was made an example of for acting as though he was officially doing illicit business in the name of the company.

Biography: The Mormons have a long history in Hawaii, longer than the US government even, establishing missionaries on the islands before the US made contact with the Kingdom. It's through this history that led to the mixing of families that created the mixed spawn that would be John Mormon XVII after migrations back and forth through the Islands and the Utah-Nevada-Arizona mormon core region.

Born and raised in Salt Lake Megacity to a business oriented family, the Mormon clan were several generations deep into the "Merchants Guild", while gentiles, they were esteemed within the company and as such were able to afford both an education and position within the company for their children. Coming of age and to a position within the company, Mormon worked his way through the company as a pencil pusher, to a ship crewman (these things are expensive you can't give them to just anyone), to eventually a ship captain with all the responsibilities that come with defacto ownership of a vessel.

With a vessel comes a crew, and with a crew, the threat of mutiny. How better to keep a crew satisfied than to share with them the fruits of labor and a piece of whatever extra action is able to be picked up on the way. Eventually sharing with one selves for even greater reward as the captain leads to more amiable pursuits. Before time, with a loyal crew that's expecting more than the salary of a 9 to 5, and the means to move things around colonies and space ports without fear of being checked by customs leads to a natural conclusion. That natural conclusion leads to more loyal crew members and a few ships purchased to streamline getting goods from point A to B to where there's a small fleet going and eventually a syndicate is formed.  

While the efficiency and stellar numbers are appreciated by the company, success breeds jealously and the case as to how this was possible within such a short amount of years is looked into. These ships are expensive, and rivals were snooping into how a young upstart was able to have a few ships to his own ownership from what was basically the position of esteemed space trucker. PI's here and there, bribed customs agents, and a visit from a marine force caused the decline in operations for what was the golden goose of Mister Mormon. Arrested, assets seized, and sent before a judge, a man whose a member of the corporate class does have privileges within the legal system. Sentenced to prison for five to ten years with early release for good behavior, Mormon stood up in court declaring, "Five Years, Ten Years, Two Hundred Years, how about I'm doing none of them." Seemingly granting his request, they put him into Cryosleep.
